How did this guy make it in show biz? Throw mama from the train was his best movie and that was mediocre at best. I've seen a lot of his movies in an attempt to figure out his appeal but I just don't get it. I could never watch any of the oscars he hosted or documentaries he did voice-overs for. The whole New York song and dance schtick he often does is terrible. Can't stand him. Kind of reminds me of a less funny Seinfeld.

If "Throw Mama from the Train" (one of Crystals worst movies)is your idea of comedy it's no wonder you don't have any idea what real comedy genius is.

He's is one of the last of the old time comedians that don't need profanity or vulgar shock value to make the lower denominators laugh. 99% of today's hacks couldn't tie his shoes. You guys need to get back to your Carlos Mencia's and Dane Cook's.

Sorry, but I like plenty of old-timers. But Billy just isn't funny, and comes off as smug. Plus the way he ripped on Bill Murray after his narrow Oscar loss during the show was really low-brow.

Actually, Adam Sandler is the most overrated comedic actor of all time. Billy Crystal has, at least, made a couple of worthwhile movies, as opposed to that idiot, who's funniest gig was Mr. Protractor Beard. Please.

OMG! You mean OTHER people have insulted celebrities at the Oscars too! That's, like, totally unbelievable! (Considering how much trouble the British guy got into and all).

It's one thing to tear on people whose movie sucks, and most likely whole body of work blows ass. But Bill Murray turned in a great performance, and given his humble desire to win and his pleasing background on SNL, why would you want a turd like Billy Crystal ripping on him? At least Gervais was funny.

Give me a vulgar comic playing the room blue any day. Crystal has always been grating, pulling out the Catskills like Howie Mandell used to pull an unfunny prop from his oversized "handbag." Exploiting the grand heritage of Jewish comedy to disguise your own lack of talent is unforgiveable. Let's hope there's a gentile hell reserved for his likes.

I did enjoy 'When Harry Met Sally', but I agree, Crystal is easily on the top of the list of the most over-rated comedian/actors in Hollywood today. Him and that hack Dane Cook.

Running Scared is the film I best remember Billy Crystal for. Add Gregory Hines and a few other actors and you got a very, very good film.

I hate the word 'overrated'. It suggests that loads of people are wrong simply because your personal opinion is different to theirs.

Well.. the reason people STILL LOVE Billy Crystal.. is cause he doesn't have a whole lot of output since.. Analyze That? maybe?

Monsters Inc, and its upcoming prequel.. but that's just voice over. But.. Billy really hasn't DONE alot of work.. or.. gone psycho, showed off his old nutsack and shaved his head like Britney.. (and released several lackluster albums ontop).

So.. the combination of a LACK out output.. and..a really good BACK CATALOG.. you tend to hang onto those memories.. although. he does have some duds.. America's Sweethearts? ICK.. not his fault, per se.. great cast.. just a very very BAD film.

BUT.. you watch his new funny or die skit.. it shows he still has that fire in the pit of his stomach.. He's a fun COMIC actor.. who can pull off the funny without getting GOOFY. And broad slapstick (aka Farrell, Sandler, Carrey). and sorry NONE of them have even a fraction of Crystal's chops when he DOES want to do something more serious..

Billy as a comedian, never terribly enamored with. Tends to tell long-winded, overly set-up "pieces," ala Leno in his old days. But to claim Crystal's only made one "mediocre" film? Hey, it's all subjective, but come on. "Throw Momma," "When Harry," "City Slickers," his bit in "The Princess Bride," "Analyze This!" (though that was mostly in part to Bobby D.). And even a fair list of ok films like "Memories of Me," "Running Scared," "Mr. Saturday Night," "City Slickers II" and some might say "Forget Paris," though I could barely stand that.

"If I had ya where I wanted ya, they'd be pumpin your ass full of formaldehyde!"

The opening 10 minutes of 'Mr. Saturday Night' is the funniest movie opening in movie history and the rest of it is pretty funny too.

When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers are fun comedic movies one can watch repeatedly. Comfortable as an old corduroy shirt.

And the Oscars aren't the Oscars without Crystal or Johhnny Carson as host.

May his tribe increase.

I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion. The only two movies of his I have liked were When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers, and that was due to Meg Ryan and Jack Palance, respectively. As Oscar host, I have been willing to put aside the little conservative political comments he throws here and there (see my other post from earlier tonight) but his humour remains stale and his expression often reads "hey, you're supposed to laugh with me now, please laugh!"

I think it was a scandal that a much more talented comedian like Eddie Murphy was not allowed to host this year, and hope that Billy politely declines the job from now on.

I initially thought that Crystal will be good host. I dont think his great actor nor great comedian but he has the energy and in the past he was a good host for oscars, and after last year i thought we are back on track

But cant just blame only him, obviously he had a script and there where certain things what happened. But i was almost calling for Ellen Degeneres

Even his most successful films have me walking away wondering what is supposed to be so great about him. Usually a successful Billy Crystal film involves another actor who actually is talented (Robert De Niro), or Billy just having a bit part (Princess Bride).

He did a good Sammy Davis Jr impression on SNL, but I just do not get what is so appealing about him on the big screen.

I actually rank Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy above Billy Crystal. They have actually gotten laughs out of me. Will Ferrell is at about the same level as BC.

Ridiculous comment. Watch When Harry Met Sally, Crystal is absolute genius throughout the film, his performance is honest and real, and he's doing the most nuanced comic touches. His comic timing is up there with the best.

Saying he hasn't done a lot of work is not really accurate. He might not make many movies but he's done stage, stand up, hosting, writing, even children's books. He's multi talented and one of the few comedians who can actually act as well.

Analysis This and Analyze That were hilarious. America's Sweethearts - he virtually made that movie funny as the rest of it was just romance. Forget Paris - that's a good one.

Here's another: When Harry Met Sally. 1c84 Recently, I liked his role in Parental Guidance.

What makes Billy Crystal is his use of dry humor. When it comes to sarcasm, he knows how to deliver and make people laugh like hell.
